Recognized for his elegant and detailed sculptures that draw light and color from within the glass, Lino Tagliapietra he is one of the most sought-after artists in the medium. Renowned for his technical prowess and experimental approach, the vibrant motifs float in abstract vases, suggestive of graceful, viscous movement. Lino Tagliapietra: Sculptor in Glass, a new book published by Phaedotells the story of the artist, from apprentice to master to one of the world’s foremost glassblowers, tracing his long career with hundreds of photographs of his captivating, luminous compositions.

Originally from Murano, an island in Venice famed for glassblowing traditions that date back to the 13th century, Tagliapietra distinguished himself as a Murano master when he was just 21 years old. A coveted award given to those who drive the square, or the laboratory, the masters hold the secrets of the precise chemical compositions and are responsible for the final shaping of the pieces.

Over his seven-decade career, Tagliapietra has developed an unmistakable style, incorporating long, elegant and vibrant handles murrine, or glass rods cut into cross sections to reveal patterns. In 1979, a young Dale Chihuly invited him to visit the Pilchuck School in Seattle to introduce Venetian techniques, which have had a profound impact on international practices. While he retired in 2021, Tagliapietra continues to divide his time between Venice and Seattle, and you can find his work in numerous galleries and museum collections from around the world.
