Catalan artist Javier de Riba (previously) again blurs the lines between public and private, this time adding a welcoming intervention to a chilly environment. « Canal Roya » imprints a band of fresh snow with the artist’s signature ornate patterns to mimic a carpet-like covering over the frozen landscape.
Completed in early April, de Riba carried out the work near the proposed location of an 8-kilometre cable car linking the ski resorts of Astún and Formigal. The project, which has drawn criticism for its huge price tag and disastrous environmental effects, would probably have displaced many of the animals, plants and other organisms that inhabit that region of the Pyrenees. Thanks to the pushback of the activists, however, the construction it has since been discontinued.
