Whether they’re floating in puddles of rainwater amidst chrysanthemums or navigating the chaos of an aquarium, the characters from Felicia ChiaoDrawings by encounter surreal circumstances that tap into complex emotions. Illustrations of him (previously) follow the experiences and interactions of solemn figures who seek the sun, immerse themselves in flowers and appear both intrigued and overwhelmed by the immense world around them.

Chiao incorporates anthropomorphized elements of nature to represent moods, as in « Try, » which contrasts the cheerful, sunny upper level of an apartment with a dim, melancholy lower level that receives little light. In « Bloat, » a dark, inner monster, a recurring specter, is dispelled by the bright sun. Peering over giant flower petals or surrounded by prying eyes, her figures express universal feelings of awe, anxiety, uncertainty and joy.

Long using Copic markers for her drawings, Chiao has recently switched to watercolor for gallery work, maintaining a similar style of washed tones while achieving a better archival quality. She continues to use markers for her own personal work, sharing with Colossal, « The new medium, however, has allowed me to push the boundaries of scale and color application. » Some of these pieces are part of new normal, personal exhibition of the artist a Giant robot in Los Angeles which continues through June 28 and showcases his new watercolors.

In October, Chiao will be part of a group exhibition presented by Hi-Fructose Magazine TO Arts of the archenemy in Philadephia, and is looking forward to another solo show next year in New York City with Harmann projects. Follow the updates on Instagram AND patreonand find prints on Company6.
