In his latest acrylic paintings, Innocent stone reduces the human body to its rudimentary forms. The Accra, Ghana-based artist translates arms, bellies and heads into cylinders and geometric shapes rendered in minimal black, white and pastel color palettes. Occupying large swathes of negative space, the figures have « room to stop and breathe » and the paired settings draw more attention to the engineered anatomy.
In a note to Colossal, Innocent shares his interest in creation stories and how they relate to his faith and practice. “Looking at how systems and evidence of design work in the natural world, I am convinced that behind the natural things we see (where there is design, there is a designer) there is an intelligent mind,” he says, “and this fact can be seen in the way we humans interpret and mimic nature even in the design processes.DNA codes and the building blocks of digital interfaces continue to inform his paintings and, after working with earth tones and more dense, he now gravitates towards clean lines and minimal brushstrokes that limit the marks of the artist’s hand.
Innocent currently has a limited edition print available through Elk Art, where he will also soon be releasing a new sculpture. His works will be exhibited at Volta Art Fair with African art AND Ozmen house in Paris in the coming months, and you can find more of his paintings and glimpses of his process at Instagram.
