« Shadow and light are the most stable and perfect creation tools: they unite colours, shapes and dimensions », says the Moldovan artist Sergio Ciocina, adding that « shadows move us through diversity, enhancing our perception, while light fills us with the joy of discovery. » In saturated hues, it captures the dappled sunlight as it filters through the trees and the rich hues of the golden hour as it casts a bluish-purple shadow on the sides of the houses.
Taking inspiration from the Impressionists, Ciochină focuses on the nuances of light and its ability to reveal contours and shapes. She works on panel with thick, impasto oil paint, emphasizing the shapes of windows, doors and steps, and transforming otherwise ordinary buildings into compositions that glow with foliage motifs, architectural angles and textured brushstrokes. “The symbiosis I create between nature and architecture is meant to evoke a love of space,” she says.
Ciochină is preparing to move his studio to France and exhibit in Italy for the first time later this year. Her landscapes are part of a larger painting practice, which you can explore more about hers Instagram AND website.
